In Canadian Schools there is a special day on the last Wednesday of February called “Pink Shirt Day”. It’s a day to call awareness to bullying and discovering solutions for anti-bullying.
We first heard of this day years ago when my son was in Grade One, which was his first year of schooling because he skipped kindergarten due to our immigration timing.
“We have to wear pink shirts, mom! And people cannot say bad things to you”. He was excited.
So my wife Angela looked for a pink shirt to send him to school in the next day.
The only thing in the house that she could find was a pink t-shirt in his sister’s closet. One that had little frills on the sleeves. And it said something like “Cutie Pie” on the front. He wanted not only that, but also his sister’s pink zip-up hoodie. The one with fake ruffly fur on the cuffs and around the hood. He was excited to wear a special outfit to school.
So Angela went to pick him up after Pink Shirt Day.
He couldn’t remove those pink clothes fast enough. I still giggle at the memory. Except for the part about him getting bullied all day.
Way to go Canada. Parade your self-righteousness to the world while your hockey-jock jackass culture keeps everyone in their place.
I think this should be shared widely.
