I once saw a band
I called them “Cheerleaders From Hell”
I’ve seen lots of bands. And I can’t forget this one.
But I forgot the band’s name.
This must have been when I was 19 or 20.
It was in my hometown of Houston.
Probably when I was home on a school break from Abilene.
I’m certain it was at the old Fitzgerald’s club. That place was just bulldozed down a few years ago, you know?
Fitzgerald’s was the only club I ever visited.
Except when I saw Living Colour on February 2, 1989. That was at some horrid warehouse dive called Xcess
But Cheerleaders From Hell, that was at Fitzgerald’s.
And most likely I was with my friend Jeff Coleman.
Jeff’s the only person I still regularly keep in touch with from my Houston past. He recently went to England.
I want to go to England. Bad.
All of my favorite bands are from England.
Yes. Genesis. King Crimson. Van der Graaf Generator.
And somewhere in England there’s a Baggett castle.
I’m sure it’s more like a Baggett Bungalow.
We Baggett’s came from England.
Somewhere around 1830, a skinny blue collar worker named Baggett managed to get passage on a ship to Savannah, Georgia, USA.
Which I think is the same town Drivin’ And Cryin’ are from. They opened for Living Color at Xcess on February 2, 1989.
Man, that show at Xcess was the moment hair grew on my chest. I was 18. And I was never the same since.
But Cheerleaders From Hell, they were a punk rock band fronted by two women in cheerleader costumes.
The band played two chords loud and fast.
And the singers raised fisted pom poms and did mock high school cheers while screaming ‘fuck you’.
I once saw a band.
